[Host: Lauren Scott] Thirteen years into working in the building automation space, I had a sustainability realization I did not see coming. And it took moving across an ocean, sweating through a heatwave in a country famous for its rain, to get there.
This one's a solo episode. Just me, a story, and a shift in how I think about the work we do in this industry. Let's get into it.

Welcome back to The Resilience Report. I'm Lauren Scott, and normally this is where I'd introduce you to an incredible guest. Today, it's just me — because I had one of those realizations that felt too honest, and too relevant to where our industry is headed, to keep to myself.

So here's the story.
Thirteen years ago, I started in the smart building industry — more specifically the Building Management Systems space, or BMS for those newer to the show. And if I'm honest with myself, the thing that has always lit me up about this work is the environmental side of the equation. Controls, sensors, software optimizing what happens behind the walls of a building — and the result is less energy consumed, less strain on the grid, and in most markets where clean energy still isn't the default, fewer emissions. That, to me, has always felt like the concrete win. The measurable one. The one I could point to and say: this matters.
Occupant comfort, on the other hand, has always sat a distant second for me. And I want to be careful here, because I don't want that to come out wrong. I care about the people inside these buildings — deeply. A student who can focus better because the lighting and air quality are dialed in. A patient who heals faster because the ventilation and temperature are right. Those outcomes matter enormously. But if I'm being fully transparent with you, as someone driven by mission, comfort always felt a little softer to me. A little harder to rally behind with the same conviction I felt for the environmental case.
That's the confession. And it's the setup for what changed.
In October of 2025, I moved to Ireland. And a few weeks ago, the country came within a hair of matching a fifty-year-old heat record. Met Éireann — Ireland's national forecasting agency — defines a heatwave as five or more consecutive days above 25 degrees Celsius. The all-time record, fourteen straight days, was set back in 1976. This year, Cork came within a tenth of a degree of tying it.
Now, for context — I grew up in Montreal, where summers regularly hit the mid-30s and winters can drop to minus 40. Twenty-five degrees is a nice spring afternoon where I'm from. So when Irish colleagues said things like, "oh, but you must be used to this," I got it — but I also didn't. Because the honest answer is: we have the infrastructure for it. Air conditioning became standard for us at home about fifteen years ago, once summers made it necessary. Ireland, and much of Europe, simply hasn't needed to make that same investment. Until now.
And I felt that gap directly. Our apartment here was built the way most Irish homes are built — to keep the damp out and the warmth in. Which is a wonderful design for ten months of the year, and a real liability for the other two. Our kitchen was hitting 32 degrees most afternoons. Our bedroom simply would not cool down at night. I found myself running my wrists under cold tap water while cooking, standing in front of a fan just to get a few minutes of relief — and catching myself complaining about 28 degrees and sunshine. Which, if you'd told me before I moved to Ireland that I'd one day complain about too much sun, I would not have believed you.
My coworkers and I commiserated daily over lost sleep, and were genuinely grateful just to walk into an air-conditioned office. It became this running, half-comedic exchange — how hot we were, and how strangely grateful we were for an "actual summer." And underneath the humor, there was something less funny: the smell of distant wildfire smoke, familiar to me as a Canadian in recent years, drifting over a heavily vegetated landscape that simply isn't built to expect this kind of sustained heat and dry spell.
Here's where it gets interesting from an industry lens. I went digging into just how uncommon air conditioning still is here — and the picture is stark. In the United States, close to 90 percent of homes have air conditioning. In Canada, it's around 68 percent nationally, though that number swings a lot by region — over 80 percent in Ontario, less than half in British Columbia. France sits at roughly a quarter of homes, and that number has nearly doubled in less than a decade as heatwaves have become more frequent. Europe as a whole hovers around 19 to 20 percent. And Ireland specifically isn't tracked as precisely — but everything points to it sitting in the same range as the UK, where the figure is around 5 percent. One of the lowest rates on the continent.
Contrast that with a trip I took to Singapore this past spring. Thirty-nine degrees and near 100 percent humidity, every single day — and yet every taxi, every office, every hotel room had air conditioning as an absolute given. Not a luxury. Table stakes.
That contrast is the whole story, really. Some parts of the world built comfort into the infrastructure decades ago because the climate demanded it. Places like Ireland simply never had to. And that's changing, fast.
So here's where the two halves of my career actually collide.
Occupant comfort and energy efficiency are not competing priorities. I used to think of them as two separate columns — one measurable and mission-driven, one nice-to-have. But as buildings, and the people inside them, are asked to withstand longer and more extreme heat, comfort stops being a "want." It becomes a need. And the moment a country like Ireland has to retrofit its housing stock with cooling at scale, that puts real, serious pressure on the grid — which is exactly the kind of strain that better HVAC controls, sensors, and optimization software exist to manage.
In other words: the humble building controls technology I've spent thirteen years championing for its environmental upside is about to become just as essential for keeping people safe and comfortable through weather their buildings were never designed for. The two cases I used to rank unevenly turn out to be the same case.
So going forward, I'm carrying both halves of this industry's value proposition with equal pride — the environmental impact, and the human comfort it protects. They were never actually in competition. I just hadn't lived through the moment that made that obvious.
I'm sharing this because thirteen years in, it's rare to have a realization this fundamental — and you all have been on this journey with me long enough that it felt right to bring you in on it, rough edges and all. That's really what this show has always been about: not polished conclusions, but honest ones, in real time, from people trying to build something better.
